On January 30th, 2006, the City of Manchester, New Hampshire, entered
into a contract with Corcoran Environmental Services, Inc that will
benefit the community and the region for years to come. The multi-decade
partnership will bring together committed elements from the municipal
and private sector in the management of an effective plan for Manchester’s
waste issues.
On March 1, 2006, Corcoran Environmental Services started curbside
collection of recyclables in the City of Manchester. Under the new
program, recyclables will be collected weekly on the same day as
residential trash collection. This program, along with the “Yard
Waste” collection program that begins April 10th, is just
the beginning stages of the new recycling management plan for the
city and region. The program, which extends to the year 2056, will
offer the residents of Manchester and regional municipalities an
opportunity in controlling waste budgets by recycling effectively.
This long term program will effect the next generation in controlling
cost.
We understand that effective recycling means that the entire residential
community participates. We realize not all residents recycle now
and we know the reasons why. With this in mind, Corcoran Environmental
Services has prepared to invest in the city and its residents in
making this recycling process simple and easy. Within two years,
every residential household will receive a “Single Stream”
collection toter for their recyclables. The first question that
comes up is “What is Single Stream recycling?” It simply
means that all recyclables will be put into this one container.
The resident has no responsibility to separate or sort any of the
approved materials that go into this container. Ninety percent of
what each of us throws away as trash is recyclable. Almost ever
product container you purchase still has an inherent value once
the product is gone. This “Single Stream” process can
capture thousand of tons of material that would be sent to the land
fill. This “Single Stream” collection process will not
only save the city millions of dollars in disposal fees, but with
the Corcoran Environmental program, create revenue for the city
similar to the Verizon Center and the Fisher Cats Ballpark.
One of the most dynamic aspects of this new program will be the
construction of a state of the art “Materials Recovery Facility”
(MRF) here in Manchester. This facility will process “Single
Stream” materials and separate it by commodity. The sorting
process is accomplished by specific equipment designed to separate
one type of material from the next. Additional sorting will be done
manually by plant personnel. The mission of the “MRF”
as it relates to the community and the city, is to create substantial
waste cost diversion by “Single Stream “ recycling,
profit share with the city on commodities sold and the jobs for
Manchester residents. This facility will bring long term financial
control of solid waste and recycling to Manchester and many other
municipalities in New Hampshire.
It is important to understand that an effective program takes an
effort by all parties involved. The residents of Manchester are
very fortunate to have an exceptional Public Works Department working
for them. Few residents know that the City of Manchester has one
of the most effective Public Works Department on the East Coast.
Corcoran Environmental Services is pleased to be working with this
dedicated group of people.
